WEEK 7

What a sport filled week we have had during Week 7.

WELCOME: to Miss Williamson, our students teacher who has been with us for one week. She will be in Room 19 until the end of the term. We know she will enjoy her time in Room 19.

TWITTER: This week our Kidsedchat was about Culture. How appropriate to be involved in the tweeting about Ilam School.

WRITING:
Creative Writing has been our focus for the past week. This will continue on during Week 8. We have been looking at this book....

We have worked in pairs to come up with interesting ideas about one picture in the book. We have only looked at the setting. Check out some of our sentences below.

A pitch black night, the glimmering lights stare at the young boy called Archie Smith.

Faint sounds of the wind howling could be heard through the open window of the darkness in the damp hollow room

As fog entered the window faint noises could be heard across the dusty country road with cars driving past as midnight approached.

a moonless jet black night while a boy was sleeping in his cracked old bed under his warm fluffy blanket

Faint noises. Slurred speech.
That was all Archie Smith could hear as he faked sleep in unbearable peril.
He knew that gleary golden rays of light were streaming over him.

His room was cluttered with his baseball  bat, half eaten sandwich and yoyo on the open  window sill it  had a baseball bat sitting next to a open window with a yoyo on the window sill. He had a toy sail boat on his wall

But little did he know he was in great danger. just then two white round eyes appeared on his wall and glared at him for the rest of the night.

Rain slashed at the thatched roof of his farmhouse. It was a small but sturdy one and held three bedrooms and a kitchen. Outside there were vast paddocks full of animals and a small stone outhouse

The boat sat on the shelf above as midnight approached. Two glowing lights appeared suddenly next to his bed

A cold breeze came through the open window and a tiny voice said “is he the one” but Archie smith slept on. You could hear redundant loud cars outside on the road.

READING: We have learnt about Information Maps: What importance do they play in our learning within reading? What new knowledge have you gained about the mammal you are reading about? It is very important at this age, for you child to be reading every night for about 20-30 minutes. The benefits of reading helps boost their vocabulary knowledge and understanding which then reflects in their writing. This is an important aspect of Literacy. Please could you check on your child's reading.

Every so often ask them about their book,

  • Tell me about what you are reading about,
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • What important message is coming through in the text?

SPORT IN WEEK 7

Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the parents who offered their support and help for our Senior School Duathlon. It is very much appreciated and required, so that any event is able to run smoothly. With any sporting event, there is always something that does not go as we (the spectators) would expect. Staff/teachers and helpers try to envisage as much as possible beforehand so that we can stop things from happening. We are always open to any feedback offered to improve.

DUATHLON: I am so proud of the way that all of Room 19 participated in the event. You showed determination, GRIT and perseverance. I know that some of you feel you could have done better....keep that in mind as we train for the Cross country event in week 11.

Congratulations to George and Luca from Room 19 who are representing Ilam School at the Primary Sports Canterbury event on Monday 27th March.

CRUSADERS: On Thursday afternoon we had two Crusaders come and visit us. They told us information about themselves and we were also able to ask them questions. What did you learn about them?  Their names were Jordan Taufua and Jone Macilai.

FRIDAY was our last day with the Christchurch Boys High students. We have all learnt new skills to incorporate into the sports we were learning about, basketball, touch, hockey and football.

Following Instructions

A couple of weeks ago we were very lucky to be given a fruit burst BUT we were also given a set of instructions to go with it.
